When headaches become intolerable, many people resort to painkillers to ease the throbbing pain. However, while over-the-counter drugs may provide immediate relief to headaches, the fact remains that the cause of headache remains unaddressed.

It gets worse: A recent report by the BBC stated that “Painkillers are the cause of millions of headaches” – and that the process of taking them may become a ‘vicious cycle’ of medication overuse. [1]

This is a common scenario with over the counter pain killing drugs. They only smother the discomforts and undesirable symptoms of a painful condition. They fail to heal the underlying causes of a particular condition. Through time, many people tend to rely heavily on painkillers for every little ache they experience. Studies show that regular intake of painkillers for an extended period of time may trigger kidney damage and other side effects.

Now for the good news: We found a brilliant “mother ship” list of natural remedies for headaches, with really good explanations. Some of these are so stunningly simple that you may be surprised and overjoyed that the possibility of non-toxic relief is so close at hand.

Certain herbs and spices, like cayenne and feverfew, are thought to be effective in easing headaches and soothing the factors that trigger their occurrence. Aside from herbs, one good way to deal with headache is to relax and engage in exercise in fresh air.

Some studies have revealed that fish oil intake can be beneficial in treating migraines and headaches. Applying an apple cider vinegar compress may also help. Modern day studies revealed that this powerful tonic is useful in treating scurvy, hay fever and headache.

Other tips that can help relieve headache include improved water intake, reduced chocolate consumption, and increased intake of foods rich in Vitamin B3. Also known as niacin, Vitamin B3 plays a vital role increasing the flow of blood by dilating the blood vessels. Insufficient amount of Vitamin B3 in the body is thought to be responsible for the occurrence of vascular headaches.

Applying (diluted) peppermint oil may also work. Peppermint is known for its soothing effect that may help people suffering from headache and migraine. You might also want to munch on a slice of ginger root. Ginger is known for its ability to help people with inflammatory conditions as well as headaches and nausea.
