For centuries, sage has been highly regarded for its culinary benefits, in addition to its therapeutic, aromatic and healthy-enhancing properties. This perennial shrub is thought to be effective in enhancing the flavors of meats and cheeses. Also, this herb makes a wonderful plant in your garden because it contributes to the lovely landscape of your garden due to its sweet and appealing color and texture.

Here’s a curious legend about sage: Way back in the 17th century, the condition of sage in the garden was said to be the indicator of a home’s financial status! If the sage was flourishing, financial prosperity was thought to be in accord.

In Chinese and European medicine, sage was widely used because of its disease-preventing and health-promoting properties. During the reign of Roman Empire, it was used for hair coloring.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Sage?

Sage is also excellent reservoir of essential oils, vitamins, minerals and chemical compounds that work harmoniously in promoting health and proper body functioning. The herb offers pyridoxine, riboflavin, thiamine, folic acid, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, beta-carotene, zinc, iron, calcium, manganese, magnesium, copper and potassium in good concentrations.

The herb’s Vitamin A content is beneficial for the eyesight. Also, it is believed to help keep the skin and mucous membranes healthy as well as protect the body against lung cancers. On the other hand, Vitamin C keeps the organs, bones, skin and blood vessels healthy and strong while helping the body fight against infections. Studies have shown that sage is fortified with the compound salvigenin that is useful in preventing the onset and development of cardiovascular diseases.

Compared weight-for-weight to other fruits and vegetables, sage contains higher concentrations of antioxidants which are proven to be beneficial to the body. These antioxidants play vital roles in protecting the cells against oxidative damages caused by free radicals. Antioxidants are claimed to be useful in slowing down the aging process as well as in preventing the onset of many life-threatening conditions like cancer and cardiovascular ailments.

Known for its antibiotic and antiseptic properties, sage has established a reputation of being an aid in fighting off infections. Also referred to as the “thinker’s tea” because of thujone content, sage infusion is known to improve attention span and enhance concentration. The herb is also thought to help in dealing with depression and grief.

Sage is thought to be an effective natural remedy for various health conditions which include diarrhea, excessive perspiration, bloating, abdominal cramps, colds, menopausal hot flashes, gas, cough and throat infections.
