If you suffer from tinnitus (i.e., a constant ringing or hissing sound in your ears), there is a simple home remedy you can try to alleviate the discomfort.
Understanding Tinnitus
Tinnitus is the medical term for the perception of a ringing, whooshing, buzzing, or any other sound in your ear(s) when no external noise is present. It can be temporary (acute) or ongoing (chronic).
According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), around 25 million people in the United States have experienced tinnitus in the past year. [1]
Tinnitus is described as a symptom—indicating a problem in the auditory system, including the nerves that run through your ears and the parts of the brain responsible for processing sound.
Sometimes the ringing in your ears may be due to something as simple as a blockage in your ear canal due to ear wax, foreign objects, or loose hair. Other times it’s caused by more serious conditions like ear infections, hearing loss, hormonal changes, diseases of the circulatory system, issues with thyroid health, Ménière’s disease, or even brain tumors.
The constant ringing in your ear(s) can lead to difficulty focusing, sleep problems, mood changes, distress, pain, and anxiety. If you’re looking for relief, keep in mind that the American Tinnitus Association (ATA) notes that most types of tinnitus do not have a scientifically validated cure. [2]
Treating tinnitus starts with understanding the cause. The ATA claims that reducing or even eliminating tinnitus is possible by addressing the underlying issue. [2] There are also several treatment options available to help people manage their tinnitus—including Dr. Berg’s “finger drumming technique.”
What Tinnitus Does To Your Brain Cells (And How To Stop It)
After 47 years of studies and countless brain scans done on more than 2,400 tinnitus patients, scientists at the MIT Institute found that in a shocking 96% of cases, tinnitus was actually shrinking their brain cells.
As it turns out, tinnitus and brain health are strongly linked. Even more interesting: The reason why top army officials are not deaf after decades of hearing machine guns, bombs going off and helicopter noises is because they are using something called “The Wire Method”, a simple protocol inspired by a classified surgery on deaf people from the 1950s. (NOTE – this nothing to do with sticking any sort of wire in your ears! It refers to the “brain wiring” – which is the real root cause of the “feedback loop” of tinnitus.) Steps To Get Rid Of Tinnitus According To Dr. Berg
Dr. Berg recommends a simple trick using your hands to provide relief for the ringing in your ears. The remedy is known as the “finger drumming technique,” and it’s believed to have been developed by Dr. Jan Strydom — as seen in an article he posted on the online magazine, A2Z of Health, Beauty, and Fitness. [3]
Here’s how you can perform the technique according to Dr. Berg:
• Start by assessing the severity of the ringing in your ear(s) on a scale of 1-10—with 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest.
• Place your palms over your ears, with your fingers pointing towards the back of your head.
• Your middle finger should be facing each other and resting just above the occipital ridge at the base of your skull (around the point where a line connecting your ear canals would pass).
• Now put your index fingers over the middle fingers and apply pressure to “snap” the index finger on the occipital ridge where your spine and skull meet. This should create a “drumming” sound.
• The original guidelines by Dr. Strydom recommend you repeat the drumming motion 40-50 times—but Dr. Berg tweaks it to 20 times.
• After the procedure, re-rate the severity of the tinnitus. Take note of the rating and repeat the finger drumming technique until the ringing is gone.
• Dr. Berg recommends performing the technique every day for tinnitus relief.
It’s important to keep in mind that the technique may not work for you. “One should always understand that we are all different,” Dr. Strydom advises. “It is impossible to suggest a single form of treatment that will work in every case and for every person.” [3]
Dr. Berg claims that the “finger drumming technique” relieves tinnitus by stimulating the 8th cranial nerve. According to the Vestibular Disorders Association (VeDA), the vestibulocochlear nerve (also known as the 8th cranial nerve) is responsible for sending signals between the brain and your inner ear. [4] Damage to this nerve can result in tinnitus.
Additional Tinnitus Remedies
Aside from the above technique by Dr. Berg and Dr. Strydom, you can also explore the following treatment options to alleviate your tinnitus symptoms:
• Hearing aids can help improve your tinnitus symptoms. One survey showed that 60% of respondents experienced some relief by using hearing aids. [5]
• Some studies suggest that exercise may reduce the symptoms of tinnitus and improve your overall well-being. [6]
•Sound- masking devices that create external sounds like white noise can help distract the patient from the ringing in their ear(s). [7]
• Mindfulness-based stress reduction may be a useful way to treat tinnitus. According to a study published in The Hearing Journal, an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction program reported significant improvements in tinnitus symptoms. [8]
• Take preventive measures, such as avoiding loud noises and other issues associated with a risk of tinnitus.
Conclusion: Tinnitus can be irritating, with far-reaching implications on your everyday life. But there are ways to live more productively and comfortably by alleviating the symptoms, such as the “finger drumming technique” recommended by Dr. Berg.
But regardless of whether it works for you, consider talking to your doctor to identify and address any underlying conditions that may be causing your tinnitus.
