Juicing vegetables is one of the latest crazes in the natural health community. It offers many nutritional benefits, and that is especially true when it comes to celery juice. Some people find the crunchy herb bland and only full of water. This notion prevents them from taking advantage of all the nutrients the vegetable offers.
What would happen to your gut if you consume a glass of celery juice for thirty days? To confirm the health and nutritional benefits of celery juice, Fern Olivia of MindBodyGreen.com gave the amazing juice a try. The results will shock you and will encourage you to give the powerhouse of a drink a shot. Here are her findings:
1. Increased Satiety
According to Olivia, she felt satiated whenever she consumed celery juice. Celery is a leafy green vegetable that is high in fiber which helps in increasing satiety. Drinking the juice throughout the day will help you feel full – and therefore this benefit posits celery as an effective means to lose weight. This was confirmed by a 2015 study published in PLoS Medicine. [1]
2. Sharper Mind
Drinking celery juice means a greater output of stomach acid which in turn reduces more proteins to amino acids. Celery contains compounds called flavonoids which according to studies have the potential to protect neurons against injury, to promote memory, learning, and cognitive function. [2]
3. Easier Digestion And More Energy
Celery juice can strengthen your digestion due to the unique sodium composition of the vegetable. These mineral salts will help in the restoration of your stomach’s hydrochloric acid (HCL) over time. HCL plays an important role in digestion and the regulation of pH in the stomach. [3]
4. Weight Control
Regular intake of celery juice helped Olivia in eliminating the troublesome problem of bloating. Celery contains fiber which can help in decreasing overall intake of carbohydrate. Vegetable juice may help overweight dieters lose more weight. [4]
5. Lower Stress Levels
Juicing with celery may be beneficial to sufferers of stress-related disorders or anxiety. Olivia felt a greater sense of calm and relaxation following the celery juice therapy.
Other Health Benefits
6. Lowers Cholesterol
Celery contains an oil called butylphthalide which gives the vegetable its peppery taste and smell. The essential oil has been shown effective in treating hypertension in animals and protecting cholesterol levels due to its antioxidant properties. [5]
7. Fights Cancer
Celery has luteolin, a phytonutrient which suppresses inflammation that occurs in response to allergen and carcinogen exposure. The anticancer role of luteolin was the subject of a 2009 study published in the journal Current Cancer Drug Targets. [6]
8. Can Help Prevent Dementia
Your brain needs to be subsidized with nutrient-rich organics to substantially reduce the wear and tear that causes dementia. [7] Celery has high water and cellulose content which flushes out the excess toxins, resulting in a better flow of blood to the brain.
9. Arthritis Support
A 2015 study reported in the journal Progress in Drug Research confirmed the antiarthritic activity of celery seed and related extracts. [8] The study revealed the potential of celery seed extracts as a therapeutic option to treat arthritis and inflammatory diseases.
10. Helps Prevent Ulcers
A 2010 study published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Biology showed that an ethanol extract of celery may have potential to protect the lining of the digestive tract from ulcers. According to the study, this extract can replenish depleted levels of gastric mucus that is required to prevent the formation of tiny holes in the stomach lining. [9]
