1. Lemon: Lemons are high in vitamin C, polyphenols, and citric acid – substances that may help reduce the signs of aging. Vitamin C stimulates collagen formation that improves the skin’s texture, prevent fine lines and firmness of the skin. A study found that polyphenols present in lemon have anti-aging properties. [1]
2. Sweet Potatoes: The orange color of sweet potatoes is due to an antioxidant called beta-carotene (also present in carrots, hence the name) that is converted to vitamin A. Sweet potatoes are also a great source of vitamin C and E that can protect skin from free radicals. Vitamin A improves skin elasticity and skin cell turnover, thus providing youthful skin. [2]
3. Tomatoes: Tomatoes have a high amount of antioxidants including lycopene and vitamin C, that protect skin from free radicals. Lycopene can also strengthen the skin by inhibiting the activity of collagenase enzymes, thus maintaining the elasticity of the skin. Tomatoes are also regarded as an anti-cancer food and an important and much-studied ‘mediterranean diet’.
4. Beets: Beets are a rich source of antioxidants, carotenoids, iron, magnesium, folate, and vitamin C. Antioxidants keeps the skin youthful by protecting skin from free radicals and carotenoids help avoid macular degeneration as you grow old.
5. Avocados: Avocados are rich in anti-inflammatory fatty acids which are regarded as beneficial to skin elasticity. They also provide many essential nutrients that support anti-aging effects, such as vitamins A, B, C, E, and K. [3] Carotenoids present in avocados may help reduce UV damage, thus giving protection from skin cancer.
6. Blueberries: Blueberries contain plant compounds called anthocyanins, which have antioxidant properties and give natural color to blueberries. The antioxidants protect the skin from stress and pollution by preventing inflammatory response and collagen loss. [4]
