Did you know that one of the body’s most powerful organs resides in the front part of your neck? It’s called the thyroid and has the important job of regulating some of your body’s most important hormones. Our hormones are not just responsible for sexuality but for a wide variety of other functions in the human body – from providing energy for our daily activities to regulating the heartbeat.
If this small organ found just above the collarbone becomes damaged, which is often related to unhealthy habits and diet, it can cause major problems with the body’s metabolism. [1]
Health Conditions Of The Thyroid Include:
– Hyperthyroidism, a condition when the overactive thyroid produces more hormones than needed by the body
– Hypothyroidism, a condition when the thyroid does not produce enough hormones needed to regulate the body’s processes
– Thyroid cancer
– Thyroiditis, inflammation of the thyroid gland which can be due to infection, trauma, or co-morbidities
Whether your thyroid produces too much or too little of the hormones FT3, FT4, and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), you can experience the following symptoms: [2][3]
– Easy fatiguability
– Muscle weakness and tremors
– Severe changes in weight
– Irregular bowel movement and constipation
– Shortness of breath
– Tachycardia (fast heart rate) and palpitations
– Problems with menstruation and fertility
– Irritability
Juices And Other Foods That Are Considered Tonic To The Thyroid:
A valuable option to consider it adjusting your diet. Early morning is the best time to add something to your diet because that’s the time when the body wakes up and prepares you for the rest of the day. Having a salad can be a bit tedious so try a juice instead! Create a carrot and radish juice blent in a blender or food processor and drink the juice to give natural support to your thyroid health.
Carrots are an excellent source of Vitamin A. This vitamin helps improve eye sight but it helps keep your thyroid functioning at an optimal level. A study in 2012 discovered how vitamin A reduces TSH levels in the blood. This can help prevent both hypo- and hyperthyroidism because high TSH levels in the blood signify a hypoactive thyroid and conversely, prolonged high TSH can cause the thyroid to become hyperactive. [4]
Radish juice is highly regarded for the thyroid. It turns out that a sulphur compound found in the radish (called raphanin) is actually a regulator of the thyroid hormones. Radishes might be great if you have hyperthyroidism, because of their ability to lower thyroid hormone profiles. In 2006, radish intake was found to lower thyroid peroxidase activity, serum FT3, serum FT4, and thyrotropin levels. This may be quite important if want to prevent overactivity of the thyroid. [5]
Kelp and Seaweed Iodine is the element that is regarded as essential to thyroid function. Because it is rich in sea water, kelp and seaweed are the best options you have for natural iodine supplementation. Astonishingly, the Chinese have been using seaweed for the treatment of enlarged thyroid since at least 1600BC. [6] Eggs and other seafood may also be valuable. Iodine is not produced by the body so you need adequate amounts in your diet to maintain healthy thyroid function. This is why some foods are iodine-fortified – including table salt – however the high sodium levels of table salt make this a less-than-ideal option for some. Without iodine, TSH levels in the body can run dangerous low. You can add dried or powdered kelp and other kinds of seaweed to your juice to give your diet a much needed boost of iodine. [7]
Notes 1) Doctors have stated that for the general population, the many health benefits of eating kale and other cruciferous vegetables in usual amounts far outweigh any potential adverse risks to the thyroid. 2) As always, this page is not medical advice. Check with your doctor, especially if you are taking thyroid medication.
