Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring deep red-coloured carotenoid pigment that is found in plants, bacteria, algae and other living organisms. It is the substance responsible for the reddish-pink color of the crabs, shrimp, and salmon.


Antioxidant: Astaxanthin has an extremely high antioxidant capability. A study has found astaxanthin to improve blood flow and lower antioxidative stress in overweight people. [1]

Detoxification: The supplementation of astaxanthin can increase the abundance of bacteria that promote hepatic xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism which results in detoxification and protects the liver from injury. [2]

Boosted Immunity: Astaxanthin plays a major role in the modulation of the immune response. A study has found that astaxanthin modulates in vitro lymphocytic immune response and increases the production of cytokines that fight off the infectious agents. [3]

Healthier Skin: Due to the high amount of antioxidants, astaxanthin protects the skin cells from oxidative stress and keeps the skin youthful. They can be used topically to maintain skin moisture, smooth wrinkles, and make age spots smaller.

Pain Relief: Astaxanthin is a potent anti-inflammatory and pain reiver, that blocks different chemicals causing pain in your body.


Anti-cancer: The anticancer properties of astaxanthin is mainly due to reduced lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. It also downregulates the pro-inflammatory cytokines in the body. [4]

Heart Health: Generally oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to cardiovascular disease caused by atherosclerosis. Antioxidants in astaxanthin can decrease the level of oxidative stress stopping the progression of atherosclerosis. [5]

Reduces Vascular Inflammation: Due to the anti-inflammatory properties, astaxanthin has been found effective in reducing vascular inflammation and improving cardiac health.

Astaxanthin is lipid soluble and therefore best taken with food that contains oils / fats in reasonable quantity. It may be either naturally or synthetically sourced and natural source is typically considered the most desirable within the health world.
