Corn starch is a very fine white powder and is one of the most versatile natural substances out there. It is inexpensive and well worth the investment of a few minutes to learn about!
Up until around 1850, corn starch was primarily used to starch laundry. It is most commonly used these days as a culinary ingredient – often added to sauces as a thickener. It is also added to surgical gloves to make them non-stick. However, it also has a very wide array of other uses.
Another surprising (and awesome) use of it nowadays is to make bioplastics (vegetable-based plastics) and if you have seen biodegradable plastic forks, it is likely they were made from corn starch. Whole Foods Market used to supply biodegradable plastic forks but seems to have switched back to regular “evil plastic” – does anyone know more about this seemingly retrograde step?
Ok, we found a fantastic page listing 37 uses of cornstarch – here is the link:

Use organic: Please note that as much of the corn (aka maize) grown in the USA and other places is GMO, you will probably need to source organic corn starch to be sure that you are getting GMO-free. Corn starch is also used as the base ingredient to make corn syrup – not something that I am in favor of, but worth learning nonetheless…
