Our latest discovery is an “outrageously simple” home-made alternative – fabric softener crystals. This product is typically added to laundry powder at the start of the wash in order to add a nice scent, make fabrics feel soft and help them remain static-free.

As you are probably aware, most regular cleaning products purchased at the store contain powerful chemicals – and this is for scent purposes as well as cleaning. Chances are, also, that the scent products used are industrially produced fragrance chemicals…. and as you can imagine, there are all kinds of possibilities here for health concerns.

Jillee’s homemade fabric softener couldn’t be easier, really – it uses just epsom salts and essential oils. Epsom salt is also inexpensive – especially when bought in bulk. I am looking right now at a 20-pound bag of high quality Epsom salt on Amazon.com for $29.99 with free shipping – and it gets almost all 5-star reviews! This is a huge bag and will last a really long time, as well as be useful for many other purposes. To get some ideas, take a look at our post that mentions 21 uses for epsom salts.

Anyway here is the link to the full homemade fabric softener tutorial:

😳 Tinnitus And Brain Health?

After 47 years of studies and countless brain scans done on more than 2,400 tinnitus patients, scientists at the MIT Institute found that in a shocking 96% of cases, tinnitus was actually shrinking their brain cells.

As it turns out, tinnitus and brain health are strongly linked.

Is because they are using something called "the wire method", a simple protocol inspired by a classified surgery on deaf people from the 1950s...

  1. This sounds fabulous! As a ‘green head’ I am always looking for safer, greener ways to do things. One question – will this softening effect still work if I hang dry my towels etc? I have sworn off using the dryer and even in winter I hang everything in the laundry room unless there is an emergency. My towels are the only things that seem to suffer from scratchiness with this regimen. I won’t go back to that power hog just for softer towels, but would love to have them. Any experience on this?

  2. I bought pharmaceutical grade Epsom Salt online at Saltworks. Their 25 pound bag is 23.75 with free shipping. They have a great selection and the best prices I could find online http://www.saltworks.us/
I have purchased from them on numerous occasions and find them to have very high quality salts.
The Epsom salts baths are great.
Thanks for this tip. I have never been able to stand fabric softeners and will give this a try!!

  3. This sounds nice and I don’t know what the original crystals are made of (don’t use them, too expensive) but doesn’t salt corrode metals (as in your washing machine)?

  4. I have been using this for 2 or 3 months. I put it in the fabric softener dispenser of my washing machine. It works great.

  5. if you dissolve the epsom salt prior, I wonder if this would work. I use liquid laundry soap (homemade)

  6. Does the Epson salt corrode the washer?? I’d like to try this softener out, but if it’s bad for my washer, I’ll have to stick to the store bought stuff.
    Thank you,
    Laurie

  7. An impressive share! I have just forwarded this onto a friend who has been conducting a little research on this.
And he actually ordered me lunch because I stumbled upon it for him…

lol. So let me reword this…. Thanks for the meal!!

But yeah, thanks for spending the time to discuss
this issue here on your blog.

  8. How do I clean my washing machine with Epsom salt?
The Farmer’s Almanac suggests filling the tub of the washer with hot water. Mix in 1 cup of Epsom salt and 1 quart of white vinegar. Let the wash cycle run for a minute or so to get the solution moving in the washing machine. Then, pause the cycle to let the cleaning solution soak in the machine for an hour.Oct 16, 2019
