We just discovered an awesome list of foods that research has indicated to have pain-fighting properties. Some of these we have already covered in other posts – however this is a great new list.

These foods contain compounds that scientific reports are showing can block pain signals and fight chronic pain. If you experience chronic pain daily, then it may be tempting to turn to big pharma pain relievers – but why not try simply adding these powerful pain relieving foods to your diet?

A surprising number of foods have been found to contain compounds which scientists believe influence the way pain signals work in the body. Some also seem to target different types of pain and different areas of the body.

Something I wanted to add – one of the food is yogurt but please note that it’s important when choosing yogurt to get “the real stuff”. Yogurt was once a health food, however the big food industry has done a good job of turning it into a junk food on all levels, with sugar and all kinds of other crap now being added in order to make a product that is really little more than another type of candy. Avoid. The good stuff is natural, plain and “alive” with good probiotics – and you can always add fruit (fresh or dried), raw honey, nuts, grains and so on. Control the ingredients! It’s the way forward and is also (despite what people say about healthy food being more expensive) cheaper if you are buying in bulk. Less manufacturing costs, less packaging, better health.

Another note – pain is of course your body’s way of telling you that something it wrong. Taking a painkiller and just forging ahead may seem like the best option – but we would suggest listening to your body as it is trying to tell you something. We don’t advise self-diagnosis or self-treatment and if you have significant pain you should seek prompt medical attention.

We’d love to hear any feedback you might have on any of these pain-killing foods. Noticeable results? Let the people know in the comments or on our FB page.

How To Make A Pain Relieving Coconut Oil Arnica Salve

We just found a great recipe for a pain relieving salve that uses arnica and coconut oil – and had to share! The link is at the foot of this article, after my commentary as per usual.

As you can see from the image, the page actually lists not one but two arnica salves, one with soothing lavender & peppermint, the other including cayenne; which contains capasaicin, a substance which has been found to act as a pain reliever. We also featured another page recently with a cayenne cream formula.

One thing that makes the page stand out is that the original article has a very good introduction which explains in detail why it might be important to avoid petroleum-based ingredients in skin care. These ingredients are found in very many skin care products. Anyway, one often hears people “ranting” about petroleum based products in skincare being “bad” – but this is one of the most cohesive and detailed explanations I have seen. Very good stuff.

Arnica is a genus of plants which have been used in alternative health care since ancient times. Some Arnica species – in particular Arnica montana (listed as the ingredient in these salves) – contain helenanin, an interesting substance which is toxic if large amounts are ingested, and yet is a noted anti-inflammatory.

Arnica montana has been used medicinally in liniment and ointment preparations for strains, sprains, and bruises since old times.

We have a full page on Arnica if you are interested to learn about this herb in depth.

Note that Arnica should not be used on broken skin, and is contraindicated in pregnancy.
