For fruit-lovers, the typically-consumed part of the watermelon is the pink flesh. But like its cousin, the cucumber, the whole fruit is actually edible. This includes the rind which offers so many health benefits that you should think twice before throwing it out:

1. Improves Erectile Dysfunction

Watermelon is rich in an amino acid known as citrulline which is concentrated in the rind. One study confirmed that L-citrulline supplements could improve erections in men without the potential side effects associated with Viagra, the number one drug for boosting libido. [1]

2. Boosts Physical Performance

Researchers from the Technical University of Cartagena used watermelon juice to determine if it could boost the performance of cyclists and cut their recovery time. They found that watermelon could relieve post-exercise muscle soreness and could enhance athletic ability. [2]

3. Beneficial For Prostate Health

Watermelon also contains lycopene which is antioxidant that has the potential to prevent prostate cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. According to a 2011 study published in The Cochrane Database of Systemic Reviews, lycopene (also found abundantly in tomatoes) may lower the risk of cancer in people who have rich diets in lycopene. [3]

4. Lowers Blood Pressure

Several studies have used watermelon extract to control blood pressure in obese adults. In 2012, an American Journal of Hypertension study confirmed that watermelon extract supplementation could reduce ankle blood pressure and brachial blood pressure in middle-aged adults with hypertension. [4]

5. Boosts Immune System

The rind of the watermelon is also rich in vitamin C which is good for immune function. A diet rich in vitamin C is important for several types of immune system cells to perform their task. The immune-enhancing role of vitamin C has long been studied and continues to attract the interest of the scientific community. [5]

6. Lowers Risk Of Heart Disease

A study conducted by Purdue University showed the effectiveness of watermelon’s high levels of citrulline in protecting cells from damage. This reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. The study highlights the value of watermelon as an ingredient for nutraceuticals. [6]

7. Reduces The Risk Of Arthritis

The anti-inflammatory action offered by watermelon is linked to the fruit’s lycopene and choline content. Both work as antioxidants and have therapeutic potential in restraining inflammation which is a risk factor for arthritis. [7]
