One of the most common methods of transmission of colds, flu and other bugs is through the hands. Having a few precautions to keep microbes at bay really helps. Though washing your hands with water and soap still proves to be one of the best preventive measures, there are times when you don’t have immediate access to what you need. When you travel especially, hand sanitizers come very handy and convenient in keeping yourself protected against viruses, fungi and bacteria.

In the past, chemical-based sanitizers have really become popular and highly in demand most especially when flu season is about to start. Many people are aware of the advantages of using sanitizers but some of them are less informed about the negative effects they may bring. Yes, chemical-based sanitizers may be effective in eliminating and controlling germs, but they may also contain substances that could have adverse effects to the body. And did you know that they can actually cause germs to become resistant to it?

We found a great recipe for a homemade hand sanitizer using much more benign ingredients like aloe vera gel, grapefruit seed extract, tea tree oil, cinnamon essential oil, rubbing alcohol and distilled water. For better aroma, you can also add other essential oils.

Considered as one of the most powerful essential oils, tea tree oil is probably one of the most potent ingredients of our homemade hand sanitizer. This essential oil is known to contain antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. If you find its smell to be overwhelming, you can choose to add other essential oils like rosemary, basil, lavender, lemon, and germanium to create a more balanced and soothing aroma. You could also substitute tea tree with eucalyptus – considered one of the best antimicrobial essential oils and even used in hospitals against MRSA in some countries.

Cinnamon oil, which is known to be fragrant and warm, is actually capable of killing bacteria. One study revealed that this essential oil has the capacity to eliminate Staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus and many strains of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. On the other hand, grapefruit seed extract has the ability to eradicate parasite, fungi and bacteria.

  1. This is awesome. I love natural products. And also organic. I use an organice night cream that I love. I might try making some hand sanitizers
