How To Make Amazing Natural Homemade Sunscreen

It’s ironic to think that to “protect ourselves” against skin cancer, some of us (not me!) cover ourselves in highly toxic chemicals that are now possibly thought to increase the risk of skin cancer!

It just goes to show how effective marketing can be? Most sunscreens contain toxic ingredients or endocrine disrupting chemicals that in many cases may actually promote skin cancer growth and free radical production in the body! In fact, in the years since sunscreen use began, skin cancer rates have actually risen, and a 2007 document from the FDA stated (get this) that: “The FDA is not aware of data demonstrating that sunscreen use alone helps prevent skin cancer”.

In fact, according to Wellness Mama, who has researched this in depth, many reports show that most sunscreens actually raise skin cancer risk.

We discovered an amazing formula over at WellnessMama.com for a natural sunscreen. It also has the bonus of being incredibly moisturizing and nourishing for the skin! I was amazed to find out that ingredients such as Red Raspbery Seed oil has a natural SPF of 28-50!

Note that the formula also calls for zinc oxide which could be considered optional. If you are a natural purist you might wish to avoid it. One thing that was interesting was that Wellness Mama stated it is important to get non-nano zinc oxide. Why is this intriguing? Because nanoparticles are ultrafine particles that are literally so small that their absorption rates are typically much hugher. In other words, nano zinc oxide is more readily absorbed by the skin – which seems highly undesirable. In truth nanoparticle science is very new and the long term effects are absolutely not known.

Another thing I really liked about Wellness Mama’s article was that she linked to the Environmental Working Group‘s research into toxic chemicals that are even found in “natural” brands of sunscreen (remember what I wrote recently about the word “natural” now being the most abused, meaningless term in the whole of the consumer product industry?

Another simple bonus tip I would suggest for people concerned about overexposure to sun – get a super-wide brimmed hat and a long sleeved shirt. Job done. Or for the ladies, what about a stylish parasol?

The coconut is truly one of nature’s greatest gifts to us. As a food source, it is virtually unmatched (of what other edible substance than coconut milk could it be said that it had the potential to be used intravenously in a survival emergency?) And recently, many people have been discovering the many amazing benefits of coconut oil.

Here’s a great recipe we just discovered for an all-natural skin care product that you can easily make yourself. In case you have not tried it, coconut oil is amazing for the skin – it just seems to nourish it and “go right in”, leaving your skin hydrated, supple and super-soft. If you use coconut oil on your skin regularly, I would be really surprised if you did not report a tremendous all-round improvement.

Camp Wander’s coconut oil skin polish formula also comes with the ability to customize the essential oils used – and with a touch of class they give 3 “custom blends”: “Blemishes”, “Hydrating / Healing” and “Anti-Aging”.

This is a fantastic recipe, all natural with not a petrochemical in sight, and super easy to make with readily-available ingredients. These will make excellent gifts also!

Here’s a great home-made natural recipe that is sure to be appreciated by the ladies, this one is for a stretch mark salve. It’s called “tiger salve” not because it has any connection to “tiger balm” but because stretch marks are also nicknames “tiger stripes” due to their resemblance to a tiger’s patterning. I like the “tiger stripes” name better than stretch marks, it has a more “positive association” – can we keep that name instead? 🙂

The idea behind this formula is that it is intended to help the skin stay supple, allowing it to stretch more easily without making stretch marks. It contains simple, natural oils and butters which are readily available, and the herbs calendula and ginger which are known for their health benefits. We have pages with detailed information on these herbs if you want to learn more about them, just follow the links!
