Numerous studies have already revealed that some chemical-based repellents contain highly potent substances that may cause harm to the body. They may be effective in killing off mosquitoes but you should realize that they may incur adverse negative effects to plants, pets, domestic animals, and more importantly, to your health.

The more they get educated about DEET and other toxic chemicals contained in many mosquito repellents today, the greater is their desire to find alternative yet effective ways of warding off mosquitoes and other insects. Nature has its own way of keeping insects in check. Many essential oils have insect repellent qualities. It’s not surprising – the plants don’t want to get eaten by bugs either! Some of the essential oils which are listed in the making your own insect and mosquito repellent are peppermint, cypress, tea tree, bergamot, lemon, rose germanium, citronella, eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood.

Be aware that some citrus essential oils such as bergamot may be photosensitizing and so it is advised not to put them on skin that is going to be exposed to sunlight. Note also that a number of essential oils – including tea tree – are not safe for pets.
