We love stories like this because they highlight the remarkable, undiscovered treasure-chest that lies all around us. Nature’s gifts are not only free but wonderful – and if only we would cherish them a little more highly, we would be further enriched in return.
The report we are sharing is about the plant Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) – a very common plant that grows all over the place. It’s interesting to note that while it is considered a weed in some countries, it is actually cultivated as food in others!

Just a Weed, or an Unrecognized Health-Boosting Plant?
Here are a couple of other plants that are also considered weeds but have fantastic uses either culinary or medicinal (or both): plantain and dandelion. We’ve also sourced and amazing list of 40+ Amazing Things To Do With Dandelions.
ps. Some fairly obvious but important notes – if you are gathering Purslane (or any plant for that matter) for herbal or culinary use, please be sure not to pick from areas that may have been sprayed with weedkiller or areas were the soil might be polluted. Also, while Purslane is fairly easy to recognize, don’t use any plant unless it’s identity is absolutely certain. Oh, and of course please don’t take anything from someone else’s land without permission. There are plenty of really good books out there on plant identification and wild harvesting; check out this classic – Richard Mabey “Food For Free”.
