Well, the list of simple, natural replacements for things that are expensive and made with toxic chemicals just keeps on growing! Are you starting to see the pattern yet? 😉 You guessed it! We’re attempting to demonstrate that you can do away with “the toxic life” if you have some simple knowledge and determination… oh, and what’s crazy is that you can save a bunch of money while you are doing it.

Today’s super “life hack” is a beauty and deals with the bothersome subject of stinky, clogged sink drains – in a way that is really inexpensive and less harmful to the environment (remember, it all goes somewhere – it doesn’t just “disappear”!)

Our magic drain formula is preposterously simple, calling for nothing more complex than baking soda and vinegar. There are three versions of the formula – one for “unclog”, the second for “freshen” and the third for blowing up the bathroom. 100% joking about the third one. Had to make sure you were paying attention. 😉

Let’s get right to it. Without further ado, here is the link to the full tutorial:

I have used this for years and I stick by it. The commercial brand are too expensive and full of chemicals that I did not want around for my children.

I have been using Vinegar for a while … Did not know about Baking Soda as well. Is it supposed to be mixed together and then poured or just put the Baking Soda and then pour Vinegar?

I use this all the time but I also rinse with boiling hot water a few minutes after to help really clear the drains. It works well!!

I am feeling very proud of myself, I did exactly as above using baking soda and white vinegar when I suddenly had a blocked drain at 9 pm at night except that I also added boiling water from the kettle. Yay it worked.

    What works for the commode?

You keep the soda and the vinegar separate till in the drain because the reaction is very quick… it is a classic acid base reaction where the main products are salt and water… because of the bicarb soda you also get carbon dioxide gas produced which is what foams up and cleans the drain. you can also use this combo to put out small fires… its a natural fire extinguisher… and if you want to make your own fizzy sherbet… citric acid crystals, sugar and a bit of bicarb soda will do it… when you put it on your tongue, it fizzes and turns salty

I will be trying this in my sink drain. How can one use this to clean minerals and hard water residue out of the toilet? I have well water.

  • By Kristine Putt, December 24, 2013 @ 4:17 am

We are on a very sensitive septic system and I use this combo to clean EVERYthing! For the sinks, tubs and toilets: I sprinkle baking soda, wait 30 minutes, then pour on the white vinegar and wait until it’s done “fizzing.” It lifts much of the gunk, so then I all need to do is give it a quick brushing and wash it all down. Safe, effective and cost efficient!
