Today’s “herb of the day” is a spice with a fascinating history and a wide variety of uses – Saffron.

Saffron has been in use since the most ancient of times – even before the Egyptians and Sumerian cultures were around!

It was used by Cleopatra as an aphrodisiac, by medieval peoples as a plague medicine and was once so valuable that a war was fought over it. It was even once thought that clothes dyed in saffron had rejuvenating properties that contributed to longevity (how’s that for a marketing line?) Saffron is one of the world’s most expensive spices -though fortunately the tiniest amount goes a long way. It is even thought to have anti-cancer properties.
