Today’s super discovery is for a simple home-made salt and lemon body scrub recipe. This is a fantastic natural formula that uses inexpensive ingredients. It’s also customizable to your personal preferences.

What is a body scrub? And how do you use it? A body scrub is a mixture of salt, epsom salt, herbs and oils – with ingredients to soften, cleanse and exfoliate the skin and relax the body. You rub it vigorously all over your skin and then shower or rinse off afterwards.

Ahh, thinking about this is causing my mind to drift back to the glorious day when I first discovered the delights of body scrub…. it was a few years ago, and I had a fairly-new girlfriend. Every so often, she would bring up the subject of going to the Japanese spa down in the city, telling me how much she loved it. Finally, I capitulated and off we went.

I noticed that she brought a whole basket of lotions, essential oils and herbal this-and-that. The next thing you know, we are in our swimwear and sitting in the steam room. She pulls out this tub of what looked like sludgy salt, and opened the jar. “What is it?” I whispered quietly (you are not really supposed to talk in the Japanese spa, you are supposed to maintain a zen-like silence and meditative composure.) “It’s body scrub” she said. “I made it myself – with olive oil, salt and herbs. Here, it’s amazing for the skin.” She scooped some out and started rubbing it all over my back and arms. “Now you do me” she said. I followed her lead and started rubbing the salt scrub on her. “No, harder!” Are we having fun yet? No doubt we were, and were giggling and making far too much noise, as we were soon told off by one of the attendants. Not for covering each other in salt scrub, I must add, but for talking. The spa environment was supposed to be quiet meditation. We were having too much fun.

After the spa, I felt amazingly relaxed, refreshed and revitalized. It was a fantastic date – and we’ve been back there many times. We always take the salt scrub and the basket of other herbal treats. 🙂

I love all your recipes. I, too, have been making presents for family and friends for years. Now, I may have to make Lemon and Salt body scrub. I have used them before, loved them, and tonight you have reawoken my brain. Thank you for that and for this website. I intend to make many things. I have made Dream Pillows, for many years, Bath Salts, Bath Oils and Massage oils, Bath Bags, (which should be made with cheese cloth since they become moldy after several uses) I recommend them all. Jeanne Rose’s Herbal Remadies was a good source for me. Now, you might be another. Thank you for waking up my brain and my imagination. KD

I usually use grape seed oil in my scrubs and bath bombs. It’s just a little bit lighter than olive oil. Use this on your hands, than just rinse off the salt, lightly pat dry and rub all that wonderful oil in. You’re hands will love you!
