We’ve discovered a wonderful, easy-to-make formula for a “Homemade All-Purpose Insecticide Spray” that uses all natural ingredients. It’s perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to spray poisons around their garden.

I don’t think anyone really wants to spray poisons around their garden, actually. I just think that most people do not know of any alternative, and when little critters like aphids appear on their precious plants, they simply want to be rid of them before they destroy the crops or blooms.

I would suggest to customize this formula with the addition of essential oils known to have insecticide qualities. I’ve written a detailed page about essential oils as insecticides which also links to numerous scientific studies.

Frugally Sustainable also lists a couple of other insecticide formulas. One is a “general” insecticide formula – which is made simply with water and soap! This has been found to be surprisingly effective against all kinds of insects – as the soap breaks down their waterproofing. One thing I would add to this – use fragrance-free, plain soap that is free from other chemicals.

The third formula is one for spider mites, which I have not tried. Spider mites are considered one of the most serious agricultural pests. Something I would like to add here also – essential oils are also known to work well against spider mites – and a mix of neem oil 50/50 with plain liquid soap, added at around 1/4 cup to a gallon of water, is very effective against spider mites. If spraying spider mites, be sure to get the underside of the leaves and don’t miss any areas of the plants! Red Thyme, Lemon Eucalyptus, Citronella, Pennyroyal, Caraway Seed and Cloverleaf essential oils have been found effective against red spider mites that had become resistant to chemical pesticides. I have tried everything to get rid of spiders & so far absolutely nothing has worked. This is terrifying for those of us who have a phobia. I don’t just want to encourage them to stay out I also want to zap any that manage entry. Why is there not a spray to kill them, same as fly killer.

Alexandra and for other fellow spider phobics out there! When they are in season, conkers seem to be a good deterrant against spiders! I have them placed around my home and I haven’t seen any for a year in my flat! Even the builders commented that they usually come across spiders and didn’t see any!
