There has been a lot of talk about the benefits of drinking “lemon water” – that is, water with some fresh lemon juice squeezed into it. We found a nice article which lists 5 Reasons To Drink Lemon Juice In The Morning!

So, what is all the fuss about with this lemon water thing that everyone is doing all of a sudden?

The most common thing you will hear is that despite being acidic, lemon juice is alkalinizing or “alkaline forming” and cleansing for the system – and that in an alkaline system, diseases such as cancer cannot proliferate. That’s the simplified theory, anyway – and I’m sure that the part about cancer remains “unproven”.

For those who don’t fully understand what “alkalinizing” means, here’s a brief not-too-technical explanation: Acidity and its opposite, alkalinity, are measured on a scale called the pH scale. (It is supposed to be written that way, with the small p and the capital H.) The lowest pH theoretically possible is 0 – for example concentrated hydrochloric acid solution has a pH of 0. The highest pH possible is 14, for example concentrated sodium hydroxide solution. Pure distilled water is pH7 – and anything below 7 is said to be “acidic”. Anything above 7 is said to be “alkaline”. Lemon juice, when pure, has a pH of around 2.2 to 2.4, depending on ripeness – however the more diluted it is, the more the pH shifts towards 7.

Something that is alkalinizing is something that causes the pH of the environment in which it resides to increase. Where it gets really interesting – and a little more complex – is when we realize that the actual acid content of the food doesn’t determine per se whether or not it’s acid-forming or alkaline-forming after the body metabolizes it! And it just so happens that lemons are highly alkaline-forming. [1]

Lemon water is considered by many to be a magnificent “detox drink” and it is one of the things that is ubiquitous when you visit the spa. It’s good to stay hydrated, especially at the sauna or during typical bodywork practices such as massage… and the lemon water is thought to assist with removal of toxins, in addition to supporting vital organs such as the liver, kidneys and gall bladder. It’s thought that lemon water will flush and cleanse the system – especially when taken first thing upon waking.

Note that other citrus fruits (and other fruits) are considered beneficial in water also. Oranges, grapefruit, lime and other citrus are alkalinizing, though not as strongly as lemons.

Another interesting thing to be aware of is that refined sugars are acid-forming in the body and are reported to create conditions which are preferable to pathogens. So let’s dump the sugar drinks! I did this several years ago and have never looked back! 😳 What Tinnitus Does To Your Brain Cells (And How To Stop It)

  1. Hi I have been drinking hot lemon with sugar as an alternative to tea or coffee. I have been told I cant have tea or coffee any more so I decided to try hot lemon, I have tried it as it is but don’t like the sour taste so I added raw sugar, I thinly slice the lemon and put the lemon in it’s skin in the cup and make it as if I was making tea. What harm (if any) would it be doing to me as I love it. I some times put fresh squeeze of lemon in my cold water in summer but coz I drink a lot of water I can’t always be bothered but I have noticed a lot of difference in my self since drinking hot lemon. I know it would have some cleansing benefits.

    1. Hi Belinda, sounds great! Myself I would use a little honey instead of sugar and it makes a great hot drink. It’s funny, when I drink cold lemon water I don’t feel like adding anything to sweeten, but when it’s a hot drink I find myself wanting sweetness. 🙂 If you are feeling experimental you can try mixing a little cinnamon with honey (make sure it is real cinnamon and not cassia) and that is supposed to have all kinds of health benefits too.
A squeeze of lemon in fizzy mineral water is really great also.

  2. I was wondering if straight lemon juice in a bottle is as beneficial as using a lemon?

  3. Ive faught breast cancer twice in the last 12 years. Fresh lemon or lime is brilliant. Herbs did wonders too

  4. I have doing this for years and you do not get the desired results if you don’t use real lemons not that stuff in a bottle.

  5. I drink lemon no sugar added past 2 months…. no wt lost noted. Still continue drink…looking for good results

  7. Several years ago, on TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network), there was a doctor by the name of Dr. Cherry. He was talking about how God made our bodies with an enzyme, that helps to break down foods, etc., He said that eating grapefruit (which the older generation will eat in the morning), cuts off the natural enzyme. And with this happening, when an individual takes medications (even those that are time released), they end up over-dosing on their meds. I have not had this confirmed, since hearing this from Dr. Cherry. But, it is something to definitely be concerned about.

  9. I use the lemon in the little bottles..I fill a large glass with ice and a wedge of lemon and lime squirt about two fingers worth of lemon juice and fill w/ water..I’ve lost 13 pds in two months..coupling that with small portions and NO SODA AT ALL not even diet…and do not eat after 7…I drink the water up untul bedtime averaging 4-5 big glasses a day…good luck 🙂

  10. To Sharon.
Yes Grapefruit reacts with certain medications. Be sure to read the leaflet provided with the medications and/or ask the Dr.

  11. If you use any part of the peel, it’s preferable that you use organic lemons. Otherwise you’re going to get more than you bargained for.

  12. I use 1 cut and sqezed Lemmon each morning in a 10 oz glass of distilled water and not eat or drenk anything else for 1 hour and for 3 years now I have not COUGHT a cold or flu … Of course I’m a Vegan to and I have not had any health problems

  13. Two questions for you: my Cinnamon is ground by “Tones” and says that it is ground cinnamon that comes from the bark of selected cassia trees… Is that bad?

Also, can you use lemon juice instead of fresh squeezed lemon? I have “ReaLemon juice by Borden”. Ingredients are Lemon juice from concentrate (water, concentrated lemon juice), sodium bisulfite (preservative), sodium benzoate (preservative), and lemon oil.

    Thank you:)

  14. I keep a jug of lemon and lime water in the fridge all the time, we drink it through the day. Love it!

  15. Ever since I’ve came across this article. I’ve been regularly adding slices of lemon into my water. But it’s not so advisable to put it into a plastic bottle is it? Coz I personally find it handy to carry it around wherever I go.

  16. Hi, I always heard pupils say mix cinnamon with honey, may I know where to buy cinnamon? Isn’t it those in red & white bottle one?

  17. The article suggests using carbonated water as a variety. The danger in that, all carbonated water neutralizes your stomach acid instantly until it is processed out of the stomach so proper digestion is halted. Also rather than using regular refined processed sugar, I recommend Stevia. You use less & tastes great. Healthier.

  18. Hi dear admin I m also drinking lemon with Luke warm water and I mixed little honey and it tastes really good and I feel so many changes in my body
I m drinking early in the morning with empty stomach.

  19. Hi ,i buy lemons in bulk and squeeze them all then use the ice cube tray and freeze them.I then just take one or two as required.I find this a easy way to make sure i always have lemons ready in the morning.Instead of people adding sugar i suggest honey its much better for them.

  20. I don’t like the taste of lemons, but I do LOVE limes. Would I get the same benefits from doing this with limes or do I have to kinda force myself to love lemons?

  21. Can you tell me if blending a lemon and a can of pineapple is healthy?

    Cheers

    Raymond

  22. I squeeze a fresh small lemon in warm water every morning. And it makes me feel good!!!! It’s like a breath of fresh air.

  23. To prevent enamel damage, drink
Through a straw so that it bypasses your teeth
And goes straight to the back of the mouth

  24. I drink lemon water that I leave covered overnight in a pint glass on waking and another glass with hot water, lemon and a big pinch of cayenne pepper. Kinda become a healthy habit. I have been doing this for years 🙂

  25. From what I understand adding lemon/honey etc to the lemon will change its alkaline property. Sugar is detrimental to your health and is very acidic. If you have problem drinking lemon start with a little bit until your body is accustomed to it. drinking it in warm water also help.

  26. I would like to know what is the better method to decrease the level of uric acid in my body?
